Emergency First Aid
This qualification provides candidates with the skills and knowledge to deal with first aid situations in low risk work environments. This is suitable for anyone who has been identified by the employer as being suitable to take on the role of first aider in the workplace.
This course should be undertaken as:
• Initial training
• Annual first aider skills refresher
• Three yearly re qualification
The Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to enable first aid to be given to employees if they are injured or become ill at work.
These regulations apply to all workplaces including those of five or fewer employees and the self-employed. First aiders must have a valid certificate of competence.
There are two approved courses for first aid in the workplace:
- The three day First Aid at Work course (which replaces the old four day course)
- A one day course for Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course.
In general the EFAW qualification may be more suitable for low risk environments (e.g. shops, offices, organisations with less than 100 employees) For regulatory purposes, successfully completing an EFAW course will enable the candidate to act as a first aider in the workplace.
Note: The HSE strongly recommends all first aiders (FAW and EFAW) do an annual half day refresher course to help them to keep up to date with any change to first aid procedures
